Hair cutting and styling: what to look for
Hairdressing is not a protected profession anywhere in the UK. There is no licence, no mandatory qualification and no register you must join to cut hair for money. What separates a good salon from a bad one is training, insurance and how willingly they answer questions about both.

Is it regulated?
No licence is required to perform this anywhere in the UK. Cutting, colouring and styling do not penetrate the skin or apply light, electricity, cold or heat, so they fall outside the scheme’s definition altogether rather than merely awaiting it. Qualification and insurance still matter, and no law requires either.
Basis: Section 180, Health and Care Act 2022 and the Government's consultation response of 7 August 2025, tracked in House of Commons Library briefing CBP-10331.
What the practitioner should hold
The common route is an NVQ or VRQ Level 2 in Hairdressing, with Level 3 for advanced cutting and colour. These are real, checkable qualifications from named awarding bodies. Nothing compels a stylist to hold one.
Insurance
Salon treatment-risk insurance should name hairdressing services. If a self-employed stylist rents a chair, their policy is separate from the salon's — ask whose covers your appointment.
What it costs
Guide price: we do not yet have enough member listings to publish a reliable range for cutting & styling. We publish this figure only when there is real data behind it.
Questions to ask before you book
- What qualification do you hold, and who awarded it?
- How long have you been cutting this hair type?
- Can I see recent work on hair like mine?
- What happens if I am not happy with the result?
Red flags
- No consultation before scissors touch hair
- Cannot name a qualification or awarding body
- Pressure to commit to a big change on the day
- No patch test offered when colour is being added
Common questions
Do hairdressers need a licence in the UK?
No. Hairdressing is not a protected profession and no UK nation requires a licence to cut hair. The Hair and Beauty Industry Authority sets standards and the Hair Council operates a register, but registration is voluntary.
Do I need a patch test for a haircut?
Not for cutting alone. A patch test is for colour, and it matters — see our colour guide. Any salon adding colour on the day of a cut should still test first.
