Hair extensions: methods, damage and aftercare

Extensions are unlicensed in the UK and the main risk is traction — extensions fitted too tightly or left in too long pull on the follicle and can cause lasting hair loss. Method, tension and removal matter more than brand.

Outside the scheme

Is it regulated?

No licence is required to perform this anywhere in the UK. Cutting, colouring and styling do not penetrate the skin or apply light, electricity, cold or heat, so they fall outside the scheme’s definition altogether rather than merely awaiting it. Qualification and insurance still matter, and no law requires either.

Basis: Section 180, Health and Care Act 2022 and the Government's consultation response of 7 August 2025, tracked in House of Commons Library briefing CBP-10331.

What the practitioner should hold

Extension training is usually method-specific and provided by the system manufacturer rather than an awarding body. Ask which method and which system, and whether they are certified for that exact one.

Insurance

Treatment-risk cover should name extensions and, ideally, the method. Bonded and micro-ring methods are sometimes rated separately from tape or weft.

What it costs

Guide price: we do not yet have enough member listings to publish a reliable range for extensions. We publish this figure only when there is real data behind it.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Which method do you recommend for my hair, and why?
  2. How often will these need moving up?
  3. How are they removed, and is removal included?
  4. What happens if my own hair is damaged?

Red flags

  • One method pushed regardless of hair condition
  • No plan or price for removal and maintenance
  • Immediate tightness or soreness treated as normal
  • No consultation on the condition of your own hair first

Common questions

Do hair extensions damage your hair?

They can. Traction alopecia is caused by sustained tension on the follicle, and it is the main risk with any method. Correct tension, correct maintenance intervals and professional removal are what prevent it.

Is extension fitting regulated?

No. There is no licence and no legally required qualification. Training is usually offered by the system manufacturer, so ask which system they are certified in.
