Waxing: hygiene standards and what to expect

Waxing removes hair from the root using warm or hot wax, typically in 15–45 minute appointments. It sits outside England's proposed cosmetic-procedure licensing scheme. The standard that actually matters is hygiene: no double-dipping, and single-use spatulas throughout.

Outside the scheme

Is it regulated?

No licence is required to perform this anywhere in the UK. Sits outside the licensing scheme as drafted — it does not penetrate the skin or apply light, electricity, cold or heat in the way the scheme defines. Qualification and insurance still matter, and no law requires either.

Basis: Section 180, Health and Care Act 2022 and the Government's consultation response of 7 August 2025, tracked in House of Commons Library briefing CBP-10331.

What the practitioner should hold

Level 2 for general waxing; intimate waxing is normally a separate Level 3 certificate.

Insurance

Ask whether intimate waxing is covered — it is a common exclusion.

What it costs

Guide price: we do not yet have enough member listings to publish a reliable range for waxing. We publish this figure only when there is real data behind it.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Do you double-dip the spatula?
  2. What qualification do you hold for intimate waxing?
  3. Which wax do you use, and is it suitable for sensitive skin?
  4. What should I do about ingrown hairs afterwards?

Red flags

  • Spatula returned to the pot after touching skin
  • Wax that is visibly too hot or tested on you rather than the therapist
  • No aftercare advice
  • Reluctance to discuss qualification for intimate work

Common questions

How long does hair need to be for waxing?

Around a quarter of an inch — roughly two weeks of growth for most people. Shorter and the wax cannot grip; much longer and it hurts more than it needs to.

Is double-dipping dangerous?

It is the main hygiene failure in waxing, because it returns a spatula that has touched skin to the shared pot. A professional will use a fresh spatula every time and will not mind you noticing.

Can I wax while using retinoids?

Tell your therapist. Retinoids thin the skin's surface and waxing over them can lift skin. Most will ask you to stop for a period beforehand, or decline the area.
